Practical experiences with transforming heterogenous manuscript databases into a unified event-based data model

Aktiviteetti: Kutsuttu akateeminen esitelmä

Description

Manuscripts are a treasured evidence from the premodern era. In order to study the history and the provenance of manuscripts on a large scale, the Mapping Manuscript Migrations project (2017-2019) focuses on aggregating data from three major data sources: Schoenberg Database of Manuscripts, Medieval Manuscripts in Oxford Libraries and Bibale Database. The project employs a unified event-based Linked Data model derived from the CIDOC-CRM and FRBRoo ontologies. This presentation offers preliminary results, including a web-based user interface for manuscript research. Also challenges faced in data aggregation tasks, such as differing semantics (e.g. source databases storing information about manuscript objects or observations about manuscripts), sparsity of data, handling conflicting information, various practices in populating the source databases and lack of unique identifiers for core entities, will be highlighted.
