Description
Novel techniques and methods in 3D measuring and modelling such as laser scanning and digital photogrammetry are increasingly changing the modes of visualization. These techniques offer fast and efficient ways to produce photorealistic digital environments.3D models are increasingly applied in the context of the built environment, both as 3D city models (Biljecki et al., 2015) and the development of applications for building information models (Azhar et al., 2015). There are several tools for creating browser based systems that support the visualization of 3D models. These tools range from model viewer utilities to game engines, where sophisticated interactive applications can be built.
In our presentation we will look into a set of existing systems applied in Finland, and discuss their common properties and differences. We are also interested in discussing the societal possibilities and challenges that new visualization methods bring forward. For example, online 3D visualizations create potential for practices in participatory urban planning. Apart from mere visualizations these new technologies can change the way in which people interact with each other and planning professionals. They can also change the ways in which different actors are able to create and share knowledge in planning processes.
