Abstract

The Finnish Society for Environmental Social Science YHYS ry, was
founded in 1994. This book celebrates the society’s 30th anniversary.
Around the same time, the first professorship in environmental
policy was established and the field began to gain institutional status
in universities. However, the roots of environmental social science
in Finland go back further, and so the book starts from the 1960s
when the environment became a societal issue. In recent decades,
environmental social science has expanded, become exceedingly
multidisciplinary, and claimed a place in academic scholarship as well
as in government. In the articles in the book, scholars ranging from
emeritus professors to doctoral researchers examine the field’s past,
present, and future. The multiple crises of our time truly underline
the need for social scientific understanding. By documenting
the development of the field, this volume is reaching out to new
generations of researchers as well as taking a stance on science policy.
