Abstract

The statistical properties of acoustic emission in wood compression were studied and found to follow the Gutenberg-Richter and Omori laws. The event energies and interevent waiting times show correlations arising from aftershock sequences. Based on these results a prediction method for the acoustic emisson was developed and tested in a real time measurement setup. The predictions made were approximately 5 to 10 times better than a random guess.
