Abstract
The integration of responsive and electrically active materials into textiles has expanded traditional textile properties, giving rise to dynamic surface textures and shape-deforming qualities. However, the fabrication of kinetic textiles often relies on ready-made materials, limiting control over material and structural choices. Additionally, there has been insufficient focus on designing and constructing woven textiles specifically for kinetic expression. This study addresses this gap by analysing related works to outline design dimensions pertinent to kinetic expression and exploring how these dimensions can be integrated into the woven textile design process. Using a practice-based design research approach, we analyzed the design process of two kinetic woven textiles. The results demonstrate how material combinations, surface textures, and figurative patterns can be designed in conjunction with kinetic qualities. We offer reflections on how the design process navigates between static and active states, revealing textiles' hidden kinetic affordances and guiding structural and material adjustments.
