UHF RFID Sensors Based on Frequency Modulation

Abstract

This paper describes passive wireless light and pressure sensors. The sensed information is carried in the modulation frequency of the sensors and they could be made compatible with the existing UHF RFID standards. Light and pressure sensors are demonstrated at 867 MHz and they provide a read range of 12 m and 10 m respectively, assuming a typical UHF RFID reader fulfilling the frequency regulations in Europe. The result of this work shows that a change in the sensor can be detected with low uncertainty.
