TRANSACTIVE-BASED CONTROL OF ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING STATIONS CONSIDERING NETWORK CONGESTION

Abstract

Transformation of electric energy systems due to integration of private renewable energy sources (RESs) as well as flexible energy sources (FESs) has resulted in new operational challenges, which could not be handled considering the conventional approaches. Respectively, the overpower generation/consumption of these resources in distribution networks could result in network congestion, which hinder the reliable operation of the system. Aside high integration of wind and solar power units, electric vehicles (EVs) and EV charging stations would significantly integrated in energy systems. As a result, EV charging stations could provide flexibility service for system operators to mitigate the network congestion. Accordingly, this paper aims to develop a transactive-based algorithm to induce the collaboration of the EV units in mitigating the network congestion caused by overpower generation/consumption of local resources in a distribution network. In the developed approach, system operator updates the energy price at each EV station considering its connecting point to the network to induce the EVs participation in mitigating the network congestion. Moreover, EV charging stations would update their power request considering the received updated energy price from the operator, which would eventually mitigate the network congestion. Finally, the developed approach is applied on a 37 bus test system to analyze its effect on mitigating the network congestion utilizing the flexibility of EV charging stations.
