Thresholds of central nervous system stimulation at intermediate frequencies

Abstract

There is a lack of scientific data about human exposure to intermediate frequency (300 Hz-10 MHz) electromagnetic fields (EMF). Here, we investigated the thresholds of stimulation of brain tissue for intermediate frequency EMF using multi-scale computational modelling, combining electromagnetic dosimetry with biological neuron models. By analysing data from physiological measurements, an approximative threshold-frequency curve was constructed and compared with existing data on stimulation thresholds. The results show that existing safety guidelines have a large margin of safety, especially at frequencies around 1 kHz.
