This exhibition opens a discussion of the importance sea has had in the formation of Finnish culture. It presents the sea depicted as an environment and a landscape, as a source of livelihood and a form of life. It focuses on the meaning of seafare, shipping, harbours, the urban life, and interaction through trade, travel and tourism. It questions the marginal position sea was granted during the formation of the Finnish identity and the concept of a nation in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. By bringing up the multilingual and multicultural coastal area and archipelago of Finland, this exhibition shows how Finland has never been an isolated and uniform culture, but instead constantly embraced and enriched by ideas and influences from near and far. The works of art in this exhibition are chosen from the members of STSY - Association of Finnish Fine Arts Foundations.
