The Role of Chaos in the Creative Process: The View of Media Practitioners in Finland

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaperScientificpeer-review

Abstract

The aim of this presentation is to phenomenographically discuss the role of chaos in the creative process, with focus on the media industry. A qualitative survey was conducted among creators of original content at the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE in Finland. Thirty respondents of thirty-five answered that chaos is part of the creative process. The presentation discusses how the respondents felt when they experienced chaos and how they dealt with the situation. In striving for efficiency to achieve creative goals, uncertainty and vagueness are often overlooked. Still incubation is recognized as an important part of the creative process. The study may be useful for researchers within the discourse of creativity and innovation, for people involved with creative processes, and practitioners inventing formats and concepts in the audiovisual field.
