Abstract
Platform firms facilitate, foster, and govern the valuable interactions and contributions of large crowds of independent and autonomous actors. Boundary resources are key for this governance at scale and at arms’ length distance but they have been mostly studied within digital, software platform context related to governance of developers of complementary apps. Considering the success of platform firms in varied domains and the similarity of governance issues across them, this is an unnecessarily limiting view to boundary resources and their use in platform governance. We provide a conceptual theorization of BRs that adapts and extends their applicability to address the wide gamut of platforms, platform actors, and their different contributions.
