Techno-economic Assessment for Hydrothermal Liquefaction of Lignocellulosic Biomass, a Finnish case study

Abstract

Hydrothermal liquefaction of biomass continues to show promise in experimental scale tests for both, biocrude yield and carbon balance toward desirable organic products. As part of Finland's national drive toward a future bio-economy, a techno-economic investigation was conducted for a 653 MWLHV (15 wt.% solids) Finnish forest residue feedstock under reactive hydrothermal conditions of 330 ⁰C and 210 bar. A sequential flowsheet was developed and simulated on Aspen PlusTM that includes pretreatment, liquefaction block, onsite hydrogen production and finally, fuel upgrading. The liquid products were bio-gasoline, bio-diesel and heavier hydrocarbon at 74.6, 71.5 and 34.5 g/kg of organic feed, respectively. The overall biomass-to-liquid efficiency on a higher heating value basis and the thermal efficiency of the process were calculated at 37.9% and 44.1%, respectively. Economic forecasting estimated a total capital investment of 671 M€-2015 and an average production cost for the plant liquid fuels of 1.31 €/US gallon.
