Abstract
Syntymiä Births was a public screen and an online service experiment for families wanting to announce the birth of their child. As such, the project conceptualized the childbirth as complex cultural, affective and sociotechincal event and probed the possibility of reconfiguring its representation in a historically and socially specific situation anticipating the emerging camera phone use cultures. In November 2003 the families at the Helsinki City Maternity Hospitals had an opportunity to borrow a camera phone, document their newborn baby and send the image as a multimedia message to two public locations, free of charge. The most recent images were displayed as a video projection in the back window of Kiasma. The audience had an opportunity to participate by sending an sms-message or an e-mail welcoming the babies to the world. The images and the messages sent by the audience were published at the project website.
