Abstract

The objective of this initiative is to promote the implementation of sustainable risk management practices and approaches contributing to circular economy in the field of contaminated land management. The project also aims at supporting the international trade of Finnish companies. In the project the methods of sustainability appraisal were studied and tested in selected field sites. Various policy instruments for advancing sustainabil-ity and the principles of circular economy both in decision-making and operational practice were surveyed together with different stakeholder groups. Moreover, specific fields of national expertise with a potential for developing innovative cleantech solutions on a global market were identified. As a result of the project five policy instruments are recommended for further development. These policy in-struments concern approaches and regulations for sustainable risk management, landfill disposal of excavat-ed soils, the national soil state database, and procedures for public procurement and spatial planning.
