Supporting awareness and reflection through Quantified Self: Feeler, a design case based on EEG data

Abstract

This paper explores how wearable devices based on the self-monitoring of physiological data such as EEG can foster learners’ awareness and reflection. Concretely, the research seeks to advance knowledge on wearable devices and smart objects design that supports users’ reflection. With this intent, we review services that allow user self-monitoring and we present cases in which self-monitoring tools have been used in learning contexts. The paper presents the design process of Feeler, a tool based on the self-monitoring of brainwave activity that seeks to support learners’ awareness and reflection about their mental states when performing academic tasks. Based on the results of Feeler’s first proof of concept prototype test, we conclude that the prototype creates an experience that supports user awareness and reflection.
