STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF PAVEMENTS UNDER STATIC LOADING

Abstract

In Finland, there are no official guidelines for the pavement design for static loading. This paper evaluates whether design loads, design criteria and materials of international design methods can be applied in Finland. Studied international design methods for static loading were British Interpave and Swedish CBI methods for concrete block pavements. Studied design loads, criteria and materials were applied to design a structure with an asphalt concrete pavement. The design was based on Interpave container loads and CBI reduced static stiffness moduli values for pavement and subgrade materials with the Swedish design criterion for vertical compressive deformation on top of the subgrade for single-loading. Interpave container loads with the design principle based on single-loading and the reduced static stiffness moduli values can be considered applicable for the design of pavements under static loading. Further research is required to determine reasonable static moduli values especially for bitumen bound materials.
