Statistical analysis of recycled crushed concrete aggregate for long-term field measurements

Abstract

Since the early 1990s, crushed concrete aggregate (CCA) or recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) has been successfully used in Finnish road constructions. The raw material of CCA can originate, for instance, from concrete elements which come as a spoil due to the manufacturing process requirements, or from the demolition of old concrete structures or buildings. The aim of this paper is to analyse the long-term behaviour of CCA and to compare it with conventional mineral aggregates in road structures based on the falling weight deflectometer (FWD) measurements. For the statistical distribution analysis was chosen test section where was conducted a dense FWD-measurement survey at time period approximately 1995 to 2017. From the results were analysed the statistical descriptive values and distributions of the measurements with sparse measurements. From the results can be seen statistical difference of behaviour of recycled crushed concrete aggregate compared to natural aggregate. The studies revealed excellent long-term behaviour in the CCA build pavements. In this study, sections consisting of CCA in the pavement structure gained 11% larger bearing capacity over 20 years after construction than the reference pavements that were constructed with crushed rock.
