Abstract
VALTIO+ (state) consists of a prison, which represents complete control and power over individual, and art which by nature, at least ideally, is free. In this paradoxical equation the idea of a free space and free speech are confronted by the themes of control and power. VALTIO+ borrows its name from the system, the plus sign refers to the shape of the building, and on the other hand, to some unknown portion that remains open.
Artists’ association Arte invited other artist-run galleries, collectives and individual artists who were offered the opportunity to approach the space freely through the means of art. The traces of the prison’s previous inhabitants settle in a dialogue with imported and site-specific art works.
