Abstract
The provision of affordable healthcare is one of the main pillars of most developed welfare states and - in fact - a crucial part of our national identity as citizens of those nations. The latest London Olympics convincingly portrayed this point. Over the last few decades, however, increasing demand for the delivery and maintenance of healthcare due to an aging population as well as increasing prevalence of chronic conditions have fueled growth in costs. Scientific and technological advancements further aggravate the escalation of costs by enhancing supply of treatments and expensive diagnostics. At the same time the Gross Domestic product of those nations has been stagnating or growing at lower rates than this increase in costs.
