Abstract
Lead oxide activities in ternary PbO-CaO-Si02 melts with up to 16 mol % CaO have been measured by solid electrolyte galvanic cells of the type: Zr02 Ir/Pb,(PbO)Pbo, caO, sio2/(CaO; ZrO2 Y203)/air/Pt, 2 3 on a temperature interval of900-1000°C. SiO2 solubilities in these silicates were also determined. Lead oxide activities have been calculated from the emf and composition data. Activities of CaO(s) and SiO2(s) have been determined by using Darken’s and Schuhmann’s methods for integration of the Gibbs-Duhem equation at 1000°C. The results indicate that aPbO is increased by CaO additions to the melt, when XPbO:XSi02> 2:3, but decreased at the silica saturation. Behaviour of the component activities was found to be qualitatively similar to that in the system FeO-CaO-SiO2.
