N1 - Funding Information:
This research is supported by the contributions of my doctoral thesis advisors at Aalto University, Masood Masoodian (Department of Art and Media) and Kirsi Peltonen (Department of Mathematics and Systems Analysis). In addition, it is funded through the Aalto University Bioinnovation Center, which was established by a grant from the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation.

N2 - The role of the designer is in flux, and the responsibilities of the designer-researcher must include considerations of both societal and environmental impact as well as recognition of shared creative spaces. The doctoral research described in this paper re-envisions the designer as a maker in dialogue with the diverse spaces that serve as a setting for the act of design. These spaces combined form a "simultaneous space"in which the designer, design processes and outcomes, as well as community and environment function in tandem. Through detailed, analytical documentation of the production and design of tessellated origami structures, the research aims to produce a series of dynamic artifacts that embody a designer's actions in simultaneous space. To that end, there are three fundamental areas of focus: materials design, novel visual narratives, and interaction via co-design.
