Abstract
Planning and architecture are disciplines geared towards finding best practices, and thus connected to innovative approaches. The multi-disciplinary nature of urban studies lends itself to a form of inference, abduction, which proceeds from clues and theoretical assumptions to explanations. Meaningful explanations require an understanding of the object under scrutiny as well as heuristic techniques for analysis. Any particular society in history is compressed into some essential narratives, which facilitate for understanding that society. Our concurrent predicament is to follow the money. We can, however, choose how to do it!
