Science fiction, science non-fiction, science is not fiction, or sino-fiction.
This exhibition is all of the above.

In recent years, China has risen to global superpower in technology, while the world reacts with awe, suspicion, cynicism or sometime with severe crack down on technology in order to regulate its outreach. The exhibition tries to engage with future imageries from and of China in order to reassess our relation to technology today.

The centerpiece of the exhibition is the hologram installation News From Nowhere – a collaborative social sci-fi located in a reasonably foreseeable future in Shenzhen and Hong Kong. It envisions a joint information technology city hovering over the border between the two cities, yet disguised by sophisticated hologram technology. This invisible third space becomes a non-site beyond ideological differences, a ferment for projects envisioning new social values, where people find ways to address new social relations, care, trust, kinship and legacy under the regime’s omnipresent technology.

Sci-(no)-Fi continues with an artistic research room on technology, ideology, governance and economy. With this, the exhibition tries to strike a balance between techno optimism and solutionism, as well as between techno pessimism and nihilism. Above all, it opens up a space for dialog on technology and possible futures. What is the future role of Europe with its declared commitment to certain social value system vis-à-vis the tech prowess of the U.S. and China?
How could a public culture of sci-fi stimulate imaginations of and discussions on the society? The associated workshops will act as an engine for future social scenarios, social relations and operational models.
