Abstract
RE/F/r.ACE is a participatory video installation, in this case installed into a public tram in Helsinki city centre. Striking real-time computer processed video images are created from portrait photos (“selfies”) uploaded by the audience creating unique animations representing the diversity of human life in the city. In addition, an (optional) intensive sound environment transposed directly from the visual data adds to the visual mix creating a dynamic composition reflecting the rhythm and flow of the urban experience. By projecting the traces of individual’s faces onto the urban landscape, we challenge the hierarchical power structures inherent in the contemporary city environment, while also questioning the traditional roles of artist and audience here becoming collaborators in the production. The most personal and subjective messages are intermixed with the socially tangled and shared urban experience which enables critical discourse about visibility as a question of power in the urban experience. Who does the city belong to? Who has the right to appear in public space and be visible?
