Recycling of Ionic Liquid in the Cellulose Fibre Spinning

Abstract

Ionic liquids are promising new solvents for cellulose processing, e.g. for the production of man-made cellulosic fibers. Due to the relatively high cost of these new solvents, they need to be recovered and recycled in the process. This paper discusses the removal of water from the ionic liquid, which is the main task in the recycling of the solvent used for fibre spinning. By optimizing the process conditions, a sufficiently low water content was reached. The challenges related to the stability of the solvent are addressed, and approaches for the solvent purification are discussed.
