Abstract
Sustainable design of our environment, considering concepts for resource scarcity and generational justice, is an essential task of our age. Construction industry, as the largest consumer of primary energy, is facing major challenges. In a variety of today's building construction projects, sustainability aspects are only considered insufficiently or after completion of the design phase, which is definitely too late. As part of the Zukunft Bau research project ONIB ("Optimization of the sustainability of buildings by integrating sustainability requirements into the digital method Building Information Modeling") of the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development, the Institute for Construction Management and Digital Engineering at Leibniz Universitat Hannover conducted studies on integrating sustainability aspects into the digital Building Information Modeling (BIM) method. Action research approaches were used to analyze how certification issues can be taken into account in early design phases and how sustainability for buildings can be managed efficiently from the outset. For such a sustainability approach consistent data and workflow management within a Common Data Environment is set up. A process model is developed, illustrating a BIM-based approach to sustainability integration. Thus, bottlenecks for the consideration of sustainability aspects are shown in the investigations and solutions are developed in order to reduce the complexity of the certification process. In future, this leads to increased transparency and a better understanding of sustainability processes in building construction.
