Abstract

This article investigates algorithmic fashion design approach in experimental fashion design settings as an attempt to expand the understanding of fashion designership. How do automation of design processes and collaboration with machines affect authorship and professional boundaries of fashion designers? This research analyses four case studies, placing them in the context of digitalized “fashion 4.0” and framing as posthuman fashion design practices, redefining the concept of authorship and professionalism in their field. The cases show different ways of combining fashion designers’ own expertise, creativity and tacit knowledge with programming or/and computer-generated content. Posthuman fashion designer uses algorithms as a method for conceptual purposes, technical creativity, efficiency of production, artistic inspiration and critical approach to the conventions of fashion design field.
