Abstract

Taiteilijat O ry, Artists O, is a national trade association for visual artists, established in 2006. The theme of the Otto exhibition inspects the relation of art and design to contemporary art, space, and environment. Painter Petri Kaverma acts as the curator of the exhibition. Selecting works for the exhibition focused on the relation between the works and space - how the works could take over not only their immediate surroundings but also the perspectives of art and the environment. Functionalism - especially from the perspective of contemporary art - constituted one selection criterion. If the works on exhibit complement each other, this is considered a plus: but, more important in a larger concept is that the contents of the works interact with the environment. Curator Petri Kaverma also wanted (arts and) craft to be clearly visible, which should be kept in mind, unless at issue is reassessment or even abandoning of the expressive potentials of art and craft. Artists chosen for the OTTO exhibition: Aino Favén, Miia Kallio, Sunna Kangas, Kirsi Kivivirta, Tytti Korin, Laura Kärki, Riikka Latva-Somppi, Leena Mäki-Patola, Nithikul Nimkulrat, Pekka Paikkari, Silja Puranen, Caroline Slotte, Johanna Suonpää, Outi Turpeinen, Jaakko Vasko, and Virpi Vesanen-Laukkanen.
