Optical metasurfaces with hybrid TE-TM collective resonances for spectroscopic applications

Abstract

Due to their narrow spectral bands, collective resonances of periodic metasurfaces are of growing interest in many areas of photonics. Here, we investigate collective resonances that emerge from coupling between TE and TM modes via plasmonic nanoparticles in a metasurface-based slab waveguide. We show that these hybrid resonances can provide high local field enhancement and high quality factors, which makes such plasmonic-photonic metasurfaces especially promising for applications in spectroscopic sensing and detection.
