Observations on vortex formation in superfluid 3He

Abstract

Observations on vortex formation in 3He-A and -B obtained in a 5-mm cylinder using cw NMR in fields of 28 and 50 mT at 29.3 bar pressure are reported. In the A-phase, stationary cool-downs were seen to produce NMR lineshapes which display a soliton and a vortex satellite peak simultaneously. In the B-phase, the critical velocity strongly decreased when the temperature was lowered between 0.55 and 0.4Tc and at the same time, the average rate of vortex formation was reduced by a factor of more than ten. In addition, specific problems in the determination of the field-induced intrinsic orbital angular momentum of 3He-B are discussed.
