N2 - In their exhibition, Galtat & Korolainen evoke an idea of ‘nostalgia’ that extends far beyond their own lifetime. Galtat’s bronze sculptures draw inspiration from ancient symbols, whose significations she has interpreted in three-dimensional form. The past is present also in their material, recycled metal, as well as manufacturing technique – they are cast with the 6000-year-old method of ‘cire perdue’. Korolainen combines historical influences trespassing time and space – from the Golden Age of Finnish Art to the Japanese Edo period – in her ceramics, glass and textile works. She nods to traditional northern art of rya rug and weaves by hand with Japanese silk. Together their works create a surreal universe, where the world of today fades away. The dialogue between cultures and eras creates a sense of togetherness, and hope for a more peaceful future. Hanna-Kaisa Korolainen is an artist, designer, and researcher, who has completed her PhD in Aalto University. She has designed for Marimekko and Nanso and exhibited extensively in Finland, e.g., at EMMA, the Museum of Finnish Handicrafts, the Museum of Ostrobothnia, and frequently at the Lokal gallery. Abroad, her works have been exhibited for example at New York’s Textile Month event, Milan’s Design Week, Brussels’ Collectible fair, Schloss Hollenegg in Austria and Institut finlandais in Paris. Korolainen’s artworks are part of the collections of Kunsthalle Helsinki, The Finnish National Gallery, Tiketti, Schloss Hollenegg and Design Museum of Helsinki.Hanna Galtat is a sculptor, designer, and art historian. She holds master’s degrees from Aalto University School of Arts,Design and Architecture, and the Faculty of Arts at the University of Helsinki. In the beginning of her career, Galtat worked in architecture history and built heritage. She expanded her activity to visual arts, in order to pursue the study of spatiality and materiality. Galtat’s artworks deal with memory, meanings, perception, and the spirit of place, ‘genius loci’. She works with sculpture, installation, prints and textiles. She has also designed textiles for Lapuan Kankurit. The information on artistic outputs in the Aalto Research Portal follows the reporting guidelines of Finland’s Ministry of Education and Culture. Therefore, each contribution requiring independent artistic activity is reported separately. For full details of the work and its contributors, please refer to information provided by the publisher.
