Abstract

We investigate an extension of the concept of degree of polarization for Arbitrary electromagnetic fields, i.e., fields whose wave structure is not necessarily planar. We show how this formulation relates the degree of polarization to the correlations between the three orthogonal components of the electric field. We discuss the differences between the new 3D and the conventional 2D formalisms in characterizing the polarization state of a field. Finally, we apply the theory to study the partial polarization of optical near fields under the influence of resonant surface plasmons or phonons.
