Miia Rinne, Virve Lukka

Research output: Artistic and non-textual formExhibitionArt in coproductionpeer-review

The exhibition Mixed in Galerie Pleiku displays works of two artists, Virve Lukka (b. 1972) and Miia Rinne (b.1973), who studied and made friends with each other at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki in the 1990’s.

Virve Lukka shows mixed media drawings from the series Starred and paper collages that were made during Nov-Dec 2019.

The Starred series is based on black and white iconic photographs of deceased stars (e.g. singer Aretha Franklin and silent movie actress Chrissie White). In this series the idea of a perfect portrait is combined with a more abstract expression, creating new images and stories on the border of the poetic and the imaginary. The bright colour clouds and the black, drawn facial features form a contrastive expression with a pop art spirited touch.

The collages are made of black and white paper cut objects, partly enhanced with felt pen and acrylic paint. Rhythm and repetition are emphasized and create a subtle, meditative movement in the work.

Miia Rinne’s work Mixed Feelings has lots of movement and passing views, but in contrast also tiny microscopic dust particles, that were drifting around the studio and caught onto the film. Rinne has, since a long time ago, interweaved analogical and digital technique into her work and created a unique mixed media of moving image. Mixed Feelings is sedimented as layers on film over time, and a variety of feelings and personal experiences are reflected in the work.

The soundtrack consists of P.P. Puska’s music and 4-track recordings on already used compact cassettes. The new sounds are stored among the old tracks on the cassette and completed digitally. Using c-cassettes in the work refers to a time before algorithms, when friends made mixed tapes to each other.
