Localized Plasmon Modes in Lattice Defects of Metals

Abstract

The localized modes of plasma oscillations in defects of free-electron metals are discussed within the random phase and hydrodynamic approximations. The trapped plasmon frequency is calculated as a function of the defect size for spherical voids in several metals. The relevance of the defect modes to experimental detection techniques is discussed.
