Lithium Recovery by Leaching and Precipitation from Lithium Accumulator Wastes

Abstract

Lithium is one of the key elements whose recovery is becoming more crucial and actual in urban mining. The present work introduces the obtained results when the hydrochloric acid leaching solutions were investigated with the aim to recover lithium present in the battery waste. Li-ion battery waste was leached in HCl solution under oxygen purging. The main impurities present in the solution were iron, nickel, cobalt, manganese, aluminum and copper. The solution pH and temperature have the key roles for the leaching efficiency when lithium yield should be maximized and impurity residues in leaching liquor minimized. To recover lithium the precipitation of lithium carbonate was investigated. The obtained crystal size distributions and crystal shapes are presented.
