Laser Cutting of Dry Carbon Fiber

CarbonFiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) are getting increasingly used for buildinglight and strong structures.  Most CFRPmanufacturing of small parts is done manually, exposing laborers tocarcinogenic epoxy and also causing inconsistent quality. This problem can beaddressed by a compact automated CFRP part manufacturing machine that iscapable of laying dry carbon fiber tape, impregnating and cutting.  This paper focuses on evaluating the feasibilityand optimization of cutting the tape using a small laser diode system. Thetesting was carried out on a test jig and using two cutting methods: stationarylaser line and moving laser point. Future implementation and possibility ofimprovements in the system are discussed.
