Abstract

Previous finite element (FE) studies have shown that the load carrying capacity of an edge welded K-type joint of a novel slim floor system is sensitive to detailed modelling of welds. Experimental tests are necessary to verify the results of these FE analyses. Due to the large loads needed to test the joint at laboratory, down scaling the joint model is necessary. In this paper, a three-dimensional joint model created using ABAQUS commercial FE software by considering both material and geometric nonlinearities is presented. The FE model is validated using a previous FE joint model, which was integrated into the original truss (truss model). Good agreement was observed between the deformed shapes and the load-displacement curves for the two models. The FE joint model is used to investigate the effects of member lengths and steel grades on the behavior of the joint. Parametric studies show that the brace length of four times the brace width is the optimal member length for this specific isolated joint. The initiation and propagation of a strain-based failure follow a similar pattern for all the steel grades tested. Steel grades S460 and S550 reduce the joint flexibility compared to when steel grade S355 is used. The results of this study can be used in creating the scaled-down model of the joint, which could be tested experimentally at laboratory in order to validate the FE analyses. The results of this study will help improve the structural safety of K-type joints in these trusses.
