Abstract
In the middle of the 2010s, Helsinki is an arena bubbling with aspirations
for growth. In the municipal development plan (city plan) of 2016, the image
of Helsinki as a low, stone city on the shore combines with the objective of a
growing and compact urban centre. In discussions on Helsinki, the ideas of
an efficient thriving city get repeated. Building high and its role in the city
has once again become part of the conversation. From Pasila to the shores
of the city centre, in Jätkäsaari and Kalasatama, high rise towers are seen as
one tool of the city’s growth. How are these growth aspirations realized? A critical view.
