Abstract
What happens when you make public your private library collection, sharing a lifetime of personal book collection in a public space? How can people develop their own collective book library resource, complementing & contrasting, respecting differences as a whole? How to nurture and expand a socialised library? How can home libraries complement municipal libraries and support cultural events?
These questions are the starting point for an exhibition and residency period by Paterson, where their whole personal library is exhibited in the Salon of Kulturhus Björkboda for 1 month. The artist-researcher will live and work in the Salon, and their home library will be available to browse and read during the period. Almost all the books are in the English language, but cover a broad range of topics of interest over a span of 20+ years. The personal library is an idiosyncratic self-portrait of personal curiosities, flights of fancy, and known and unknown things that accumulate over time. Italian writer and journalist Umberto Eco (1932-2016) claimed that a library should celebrated as a ‘working tool’, aspirational, supporting life-long learning.
In this case, Paterson’s example will be a way to reach out to the local community: Seeking common interests, common (or same) books in Swedish or Finnish that exist, reading aloud sessions, online radio broadcasts, and open bibliographic work. There will also be ongoing vermicomposting with donated old books. Stay tuned for the event programme on Kulturhus Björkboda social media.
The artist will be in the house from the opening night on Feb 9th .2023 at 18:00.
Exhibition opening hours: 9.2.–10.3.2024 Thursday to Sunday 11-17, (Saturdays 11-15)
The information on artistic outputs in the Aalto Research Portal follows the reporting guidelines of Finland’s Ministry of Education and Culture.
