abstract = "The delivery of health services is moving from profession- and provider-centric systems towards supporting health in individuals’ everyday situations through mobile and virtual solutions and healing environments. At the same time, the most complex services will be provided in even more centralized service networks: during the next 10 years, only in the Nordic countries 30-35 billion euros will be invested in hospital facilities. These simultaneous trends challenge health service providers to balance between investments in facility-based service provision and new remote and decentralized service models.This research creates new knowledge about modular facility solutions in health care and their potential to contribute to flexible service location, healing environment, effective and efficient care and affordable investments in healthcare. The project answers to two questions: 1) What are the new modular solutions in healthcare that in the future will enable a flexible balance between centralized facility-based and decentralized delivery models?, 2) How can the window of opportunity in the global healthcare facility investment boom and consumer markets be utilized by Finnish companies to develop flexible new generation solutions for international markets?The research is based on the concrete objective that by modular solutions the customer-perceived value of services can be improved, and operational costs and investment costs can be decreased compared to current practices. The benefits of the research for patients and healthcare organizations include more effective care, healing and usable work environments, flexible space solutions with support of digital solutions, more affordable investments, and improved cost-effectiveness of services. For companies the benefits include new design practices and tools, more competitive production strategies, and new business ecosystems to commercialize modular solutions.",
