Abstract

Necessity entrepreneurship as a concept suffers from representational stereotyping and is often portrayed in a negative light in academic and policy work. In this paper, I propose the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) as an innovative tool to foster new narratives around necessity entrepreneurship. Drawing on an analysis of images generated by text-to-image AI DALL-E 3, I illustrate how the theme of “groundedness” has emerged from visual representations of necessity entrepreneurs rooted in online public discourse. Moreover, I propose how exploring the physical, emotional, personal, and contextual groundedness of necessity entrepreneurship proffers new insights that can inform future research. By unpacking the visual representation of necessity entrepreneurs, this paper aims to open up new avenues for studying, theorizing, and understanding the phenomenon of necessity entrepreneurship.
