Abstract
Eurocode 5 will replace DIN 1052 as the only applicable timber design code in July 2012. Since the current version of DIN 1052 was developed on the basis of Eurocode 5, the user should not experience major difficulties of adjustment. The most important differences for the practical application will be presented. Both DIN 1052 and Eurocode 5 mirror the remarkable developments in the timber construction sector over the last decades. Since DIN 1052 contains more recent developments of the state of the art and design concepts, it is actually one generation ahead of Eurocode 5. This was accounted for by incorporating the concepts missing in Eurocode 5 in the German National Annex as non-contradictory complementary information. It therefore constitutes a good technical basis for the future revision of Eurocode 5. Despite this, more focus should be given to a simplified application. In this context, recommendations towards a simplified navigation as well as a simplified design of standard applications will be given. The wide range of users and applications - from simple roofs to large-span free form structures - might make it necessary to develop a shortened version, covering 80% of the standard applications.
