A method was developed for the estimation of boreal forest leaf area index (LAI). ERS and Radarset synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images were used to get a combination of VV and HH polarization SAR images. The VV intensity corresponded to wet conditions and the HH intensity to dry conditions. The regression between LAI and the intensity ratio was found to vary with tree species.
