Entrepreneurial development of an indie artist through digital musicing

Enabled by digital technology (DT), the logic of music making, production and marketing has changed dramatically. The technolgoical devleopment has allowed independent music production to evolve from a niche market into a mainstream model. Although the activities of independent artist-entrepreneurs have been studied extensively, a broader understanding of the way the entrepreneurial activites of an indie artist evolve over time is still scarce. This study examines the entrepreneurial journey of a Finnish electronic music producer over a period of 15 years. The research builds on the concept of musicing, according to which music is an activity that encompasses various musical experiences and practices. As a result, four successive stages are presented, through which the activities of the artist-entrepreneur become more professional and international. By drawing on the concept of digital musicing, the study provides a unique perspective on the changing dynamics of the music industry in the digital age.
