Abstract
The utilization of secondary materials in earthworks has increased relatively slowly during last decades. This has been the case even though the knowledge and experiences of materials and their utilization have grown considerably. The biggest drag has been the lack of knowledge. To improve the situation a jointly organized course was developed by Tampere University of Technology, Aalto University and industry. The course was aimed to master and doctoral level students, but also actors on the field were invited to participate. The course consisted of six intensive days alternately in Tampere and Helsinki from September 2017 to April 2018. The content of intensive days with specific themes was designed, organized and lectured together with the industry. Over 50 lecturers, both from industry and universities, were involved. The core component of the course was a comprehensive group project work on the use of secondary materials in selected infra construction projects. The interest of the course was high, around 80-100 students took part on the contact teaching and about 60 participated virtually. The feedback of the course has been positive and student feel that they have gained needed information. The jointly organized courses will be continued with a theme circular economy in the infrastructure construction.
