Abstract
A low amplitude edge resonant magnetic field perturbation was used to suppress edge localized modes (ELM) with degrading core plasma confinement. The ELMs were replaced by packets of events with small amplitude, narrow radial extent, and a higher level of magnetic field and density fluctuations. It was found that changing the toroidal phase of the perturbation by 60° with respect to the best ELM suppression case reduces the EML amplitude and frequency by factors of 2-3 in the divertor. The results show that ELM can be suppressed by small edge resonant magnetic field perturbations.
