Abstract

The modernisation of society had a strong impact on the landscape in Finland, creating a new kind of built envi-ronment. The Finnish garden architects and landscape designers, although few in number, had a noteworthy role in the shaping of modern society. They were pioneers whose work has not been studied in detail and their contribu-tion is not very well known. The history of modern landscape architecture in Finland remains largely unwritten.

The book attempts to partly fill that gap. It explores the traces of modernism in the Finnish landscape architecture from the beginning of the last century up to the 1970s. The book consists of twenty articles in which the authors have in different ways and in different contexts researched the modern landscape, parks of recent history, gardens and green areas in the cities, as well as the people who designed them. It is divided in three sections. Chapter One ‘The Many Faces of Modern’ investigates both how designers were looking for a modern style that would reflect the new era and also what kinds of challenges were faced in the new building projects and planning tasks. Chapter Two ‘Everyday’s Environments’ attention is given on the social content of garden and landscape design. Chapter Three: ‘The City as a Landscape’ looks at green areas and landscape planning as part of urban planning and con-struction from the late 19th century to the latter half of the 20th century.
