    Abstract

In this article we discuss the early history of competitive gaming and esports in Finland. Our findings are based on the earliest video and computer game competitions of the 1980s and early 1990s, and the high score lists published by hobbyist magazines. Therefore the article largely deals with the relationship between competitive play and different kinds of publicity. By analyzing various grassroots and commercial cases, we shed light on the foundation that later esports built upon.
