Abstract

The increasing demand for sustainable wastewater management has brought attention to the potential of activated sludge systems to effectively remove contaminants. However, due to the complexity of these systems, improved educational tools are necessary to simulate real-world wastewater treatment plants and promote energy-efficient practices. This study introduced a lab-scale model of an activated sludge plant, which incorporates both biological and physicochemical treatment processes for municipal wastewater. The model was constructed from transparent materials for educational observation purposes and includes a comprehensive control system for operational adjustments. The aim of this model was to connect theoretical knowledge with practical application in wastewater treatment. Functional tests using clean water have demonstrated its value as an educational and research tool. The initial results indicated that the model was well-suited for researching activated sludge processes, especially in optimizing energy efficiency during the aeration phase. The model contributes also to the advancement of sustainable water management practices and the advancement of educational frameworks in wastewater treatment.
