Abstract

The product size obtained from batch cooling crystallization strongly depends on the operating conditions, e.g. cooling rate and seeding condition. The cooling profiles to maintain the different constant levels of supersaturation were predicted by numerically solving the discrete- supersaturation balance, in which the seeding condition, batch time and crystallization kinetics were taken into account. The level of supersaturation and the size of product were studied using the simulation models based on the moment equations of population balance. A strategy to select the suitable operating conditions, with which a required product size can be produced at a constant operating level of supersaturation, was introduced using potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) system.
